Steller Sea Lion

Eumetopias jubatus

Steller sea lions are the largest of all sea lions and the fourth largest pinniped in the world. Named after naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller who first described them in 1741, these impressive animals can be seen year-round on BC's rocky coastlines and are often heard before they're seen due to their loud, distinctive roars.

Habitat

Rocky coastlines, offshore islands, and breakwaters. Haul out on rocks and jetties. Found throughout BC coast year-round.

Diet

Fish (salmon, herring, pollock, rockfish), squid, and octopus. Occasionally eat smaller seals.

Behavior

Highly vocal with distinctive loud roars. Can rotate rear flippers to walk on land. Males are highly territorial. Often seen hauled out in large groups.
